When the COVID-19 pandemic struck, the Canadian Ophthalmological Society moved to host a webinar series entitled A Path to a New Vision. This webinar series addressed COVID-19 related topics for Canadian ophthalmologists with invited guests providing expert information. The fifth and final webinar in the series, A Path to a New Vision: What Now? Optimizing Our New Normal aired on May 28, 2020.
Our moderator Dr. Guillermo Rocha was joined on this week’s webinar by Prof Tien Wong, Medical Director of the Singapore National Eye Center, and A/Prof Heather Mack, President of The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists, who shared their experiences and learnings, so that we could learn from two countries who are ahead of us on this journey. We were also joined by Dr. Yvonne Buys and Dr. Salina Teja who shared a clinic reopening checklist and a surgical prioritization tool, developed by COS, to aid members in moving forward in the next phase.

The fourth webinar in the series, Financial Implications of COVID – Beyond the Basics aired on May 14, 2020.  Moderated by Dr. Guillermo Rocha, this webinar hosted invited guests Julie Petrera, National Lead, Financial Planning Content, and Jennie Ho, Senior Manager of Wealth Management Taxation.  This week we asked the experts from MD Financial Management to help us find our way through the financial challenges; opportunities and resources available during the COVID-19 pandemic.

A Path to a New Vision: Virtual Care – COVID and Beyond

The third webinar in the series, Virtual Care – COVID and Beyond aired on May 7, 2020. Moderated by Dr. Guillermo Rocha, this webinar hosted invited guest Dr. Dawn Sim, Associate Professor at University College London and Director of Telemedicine at the Moorfields Digital Laboratory, to describe practical tips and tricks for providing ophthalmology care virtually during and after the COVID pandemic. The Canadian panel included: Dr. Kenman Gan (British Columbia – Glaucoma), Dr. Karim Damji (Alberta – Glaucoma), Dr. Varun Chaudhary (Ontario – Retina), Dr. Ike Ahmed (Ontario – Cataract, Glaucoma), and Dr. Ahsen Hussain (Nova Scotia – Oculoplastics).

The second webinar in the series, Medico-Legal Aspects of Ophthalmology Practice During COVID-19 aired on April 30, 2020. Moderated by Dr. Guillermo Rocha, this webinar addressed the medico-legal implications of the unusual situation brought on by COVID-19 and the significant changes to practice that have resulted from the pandemic. The invited guest speaker was Dr. Richard Mimeault from the Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA). The Canadian panel included: Dr. Raj Rathee (Ontario), Dr. Salim Lahoud (Quebec), Dr. Alex de Saint Sardos (Nova Scotia), and Dr. Guy Boswall (Prince Edward Island).

A Path to a New Vision: Our Starting Point

The first webinar in the series, Our Starting Point aired on April 24, 2020. Moderated by Dr. Guillermo Rocha, this webinar reviewed the COVID-19 situation and the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) needed to safely practice ophthalmology. The invited guest speaker was James Chodosh, MD, MPH from Harvard Medical School and Mass Eye and Ear, who was a principal author of Coronavirus Updates for Ophthalmologists for the American Academy of Ophthalmology. The Canadian panel included: Dr. Briar Sexton (British Columbia), Dr. Raj Rathee (Ontario), Dr. Salim Lahoud (Quebec), Dr. Chris Jackman (Newfoundland), and Dr. Ken Roberts (New Brunswick).
