Glaucoma OCT Interpretation: 101

Glaucoma OCT Interpretation is an online, Section 3 accredited course available at EyeCarePD.com. A game-based approach is applied to learning OCT interpretation. This course covers commonly encountered OCT presentations of glaucoma as seen on standard optic nerve head and retinal nerve fiber layer scan protocols with the purpose of improving interpretation skills using perceptual learning strategies.

Getting started is easy: 

  1. Using the Google Chrome browser, navigate to https://eyecarepd.com/catalog/glaucoma-group/
  2. Select Glaucoma OCT Interpretation 101 (COS Accredited) and add the product to the cart
  3. At checkout, use the coupon code ECPDCOSGLAUCOMA to set the price to 0.
  4. Your course is now available under My Courses at the top of the screen. 

Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify segmentation errors and their role in OCT scan interpretation
  2. Utilize varying sections of the OCT report including tabular data, sector analysis and graphical displays
  3. Interact with expert interpretation in order to compare their findings in selected cases

Accreditation

This activity is an Accredited Self-Assessment Program (Section 3) as defined by the Maintenance of Certification program of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. This web-based lesson was approved by the COS on October 23rd, 2020 and expires October 2023. Remember to visit MAINPORT to record your learning and outcomes. Conférence internationale sur la santé des médicins – Appel de résumé

Les médecins sont aussi des êtres humains! La création de liens significatifs, avec leurs pairs et leurs patients et patientes, et au sein de nos systèmes de santé, est une composante essentielle de la santé et du bien-être des médecins. La Conférence internationale sur la santé des médecins (CISM) 2024 (site en anglais seulement) offre aux médecins et aux chercheurs et chercheuses du Canada, des États-Unis et du Royaume-Uni l’occasion d’apprendre les uns et les unes des autres, de discuter de leur travail et d’échanger sur des enjeux d’importance. Présentez votre travail, transmettez vos connaissances et interagissez avec vos pairs! Soumettez une proposition d’affiche, d’exposé oral, de table ronde ou d’atelier d’ici au 12 avril 2024.

Forum 2024 de la SCO – Explorer l’avenir de l’ophtalmologie

Merci d’avoir participé au deuxième forum annuel de la SCO. Votre participation active et votre présence ont grandement contribué à faire de ce forum un événement significatif et couronné de succès. Nous sommes ravis de vous proposer un enregistrement du forum. Si vous avez manqué la session en direct, vous pouvez toujours accéder aux présentations sur la représentation, l’intelligence artificielle, la durabilité en ophtalmologie ainsi que sur les pénuries de médicaments et les médicaments essentiels.

Objectifs d’apprentissage:

  1. Comprendre la façon dont la SCO plaide en faveur de changements politiques au niveau gouvernemental afin d’améliorer la qualité des soins oculaires et leur accessibilité.
  2. Être en mesure de décrire de quelle façon la SCO collabore avec ses partenaires de Santé Canada pour analyser les causes et conséquences des pénuries de médicaments ophtalmiques et élaborer des stratégies visant à atténuer leur impact sur les soins aux patients.
  3. En savoir plus sur les applications actuelles et éventuelles de l’intelligence artificielle (IA) en ophtalmologie et leur impact potentiel sur les soins aux patients et la prise de décisions.
  4. Mieux connaître l’impact environnemental des pratiques et dispositifs ophtalmologiques et les stratégies visant à promouvoir la durabilité dans l’exercice de l’ophtalmologie.

The Canadian Ophthalmology Mentorship Program (COMP)

The Canadian Ophthalmology Mentorship Program (COMP) is an annual national mentorship program that connects 3-4 Canadian medical students per ophthalmology resident mentor for the purposes of networking, career exploration, and community building. Recruitment is now open for ophthalmology resident mentors and Canadian medical student mentees.

Surgical Retina Fellowship program at the Ivey Eye Institute and Western University

Dr. Munir Iqbal is pleased to announce the initiation of a Surgical Retina Fellowship program at the Ivey Eye Institute and Western University in London, Ontario

The fellowship will be 2 years in length, and will include exposure to clinical aspects of retina disease management.  The fellow will have the opportunity to evaluate both new and existing patients.  The pathology will include but not be limited to: Age-Related Macular Degeneration, Diabetic Retinopathy, Retinal Vascular Diseases, Uveitis, Hereditary Retinal Diseases, Surgical Retinal and Vitreoretinal diseases, including vitrectomy, retinal detachment surgeries, macular surgeries, complex IOL cases, scleral buckling techniques, suprachoroidal drainage, along with pre/post-operative management for surgical cases.

Goals and Objectives:

  1. To gain exposure and proficiency in the diagnosis and management of medical and surgical retinal conditions to prepare a candidate for a clinical academic career retinal surgery with subspecialty training.
  2. To obtain training in the appropriate use and interpretation of diagnostic tests, including:
    • Fluorescein Angiography
    • Optical Coherence Tomography
    • Ultrasonography
  3. To develop proficiency in a number of non-surgical procedures, including:
    • Laser Photocoagulation
    • Photodynamic Therapy (PDT):
    • Intravitreal and subTenons injections of pharmaceutical agents:
  4. To develop proficiency in surgical procedures, including:
    • Vitrectomy
    i. Retinal detachment repair
    ii. Macular cases
    iii. Vitreous hemorrhage
    • Scleral buckling techniques
    • Secondary intraocular lens cases
  5. To provide exposure to the evaluation of patients with suspected malignancy, the ancillary testing and evaluation of treatment options and management.
  6. To develop skills for lecturing to colleagues and residents on various aspects of medical and surgical retinal disease.
  7. To develop critical appraisal skills and to be aware of current and completed research in the area of medical retinal disease.

Research and Education:

The fellow will be expected to be involved with retina related basic and/or clinical research. Projects will be outlined for the fellow and they will be expected to present this at a national or international meeting. Dedicated time for research will be scheduled into rotation blocks as described above.

The fellow is expected to enhance resident teaching and clinical discourse among the department. Presentation of interesting/educational cases at grand rounds is expected. The fellow will perform 2 grand rounds presentations per academic year.

Eligibility Requirements for Canadian and International Medical Graduates:

• Candidates must have completed an Ophthalmology residency that is recognized by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO)
• International Medical Graduates do not need to write additional exams, but must be approved by the PGME Office at Western University
