Freeman, PhD<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Abstract<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Objective<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To determine the use of home care services in those\nwith and without visual impairment in Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Methods<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Presenting visual acuity was measured using the\nEarly Treatment of Diabetic Retinopathy Study chart at 2 meters. Visual\nimpairment was defined as binocular acuity worse than 20\/60. The use of formal,\ninformal, and both types of home care was determined by questionnaire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Results<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For 29 666 participants, the use of any home\ncare was greater in those with visual impairment than in those without (28% vs\n12%, respectively,&nbsp;<em>p<\/em>&nbsp;&lt;\n0.01). After adjusting for demographics and health, people with visual\nimpairment were more likely to use informal home care (odds ratio [OR]\u202f=\u202f1.89,\n95% CI 1.35\u20132.63) and formal home care\/both types of home care (OR\u202f=\u202f2.70, 95%\nCI 1.79\u20134.07) than those without visual impairment. Marital status was a\nmodifier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Conclusions<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Visual impairment is associated with use of home care services.
