{"id":9467,"date":"2020-03-19T22:01:47","date_gmt":"2020-03-20T02:01:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.cosprc.ca\/?post_type=cos-resource&#038;p=9467"},"modified":"2021-06-21T15:00:23","modified_gmt":"2021-06-21T19:00:23","slug":"aaos-new-recommendations-regarding-urgent-and-nonurgent-patient-care","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cosprc.ca\/fr\/aaos-new-recommendations-regarding-urgent-and-nonurgent-patient-care\/","title":{"rendered":"New Recommendations Regarding Urgent and Nonurgent Patient Care from AAO"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"271\" height=\"84\" src=\"https:\/\/cosprc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/AAO.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8081\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Due to the\nCOVID-19 pandemic, the American Academy of Ophthalmology now finds it essential\nthat all ophthalmologists cease providing any treatment other than urgent or\nemergent care immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We now live\nand practice in a critically different medical reality\u2014a rapidly evolving viral\npandemic that is projected to, if unchecked, kill millions of Americans and\ntens of millions around the world. Public health experts agree that we must do\ntwo things on an urgent basis: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First, we\nmust reduce the risk of the SARS-CoV-2 virus transmission from human to human\nand the rate of new case development. Only in that way can we flatten the curve\nand not overwhelm our very limited supply of hospital beds, ICU beds,\nventilators and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) machines. We have\nalready hit that stage in a few hard-hit metropolitan areas. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Second, we\nmust as a nation conserve needed disposable medical supplies and focus them to\nthe hospitals where they are most needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This\ndisease is now in every state and the number of new cases is currently doubling\nevery one to two days. Already, a handful of our ophthalmologist colleagues\nhave died from COVID-19. It is essential that we as physicians and as\nresponsible human beings do what we can and must to reduce virus transmission\nand enhance our nation&rsquo;s ability to care for those desperately ill from the\ndisease. Public health experts unanimously agree that our window to modify the\nspread of disease is a narrow and closing one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Accordingly,\nthe American Academy of Ophthalmology strongly recommends that all\nophthalmologists provide only urgent or emergent care.&nbsp; This includes both office-based care and\nsurgical care. The Academy recognizes that \u00ab\u00a0urgency\u00a0\u00bb is determined by\nphysician judgment and must always take into account individual patient medical\nand social circumstances.&nbsp; Each of us has\na societal responsibility to not function as a vector of a potentially fatal\ndisease\u2014and one for which a widely available treatment or vaccine does not\ncurrently exist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All other factors\u2014business, finance, inconvenience, etc.\u2014are remotely secondary. This is an existential crisis. We as physicians must respond to it and support our colleagues and our communities.
