Objectives:

1. Discuss the role of pars plana vitrectomy in the management of anterior segment surgical problems;

2. Demonstrate situations which could ONLY be managed with a combined anterior posterior approach and demonstrate techniques that integrate these approaches;

3. Discuss various types of optic capture of IOLs and demonstrate techniques where pars plana vitrectomy can assist in achieving these positions;

4. Discuss the role of the vitreous in potential degrading the quality of vision with various types of intraocular lenses to provide a better understand of when a vitrectomy might be helpful in dealing with patient dissatisfaction after cataract surgery;

5. Discuss the protective role of the vitreous to prevent damage to the eye from superoxide radicals and how to weigh that against doing pars plana vitrectomy in complex cases.
